Healthy Lunch Ideas for Work That Survive a Cape Town Commute

Packed lunches that hold up until 1PM, what to keep at the office, and how to stop the 3PM slump before it starts.

The work lunch is where good intentions go to die. It's 1PM, the meeting ran over, the café downstairs is a toasted sandwich and a fizzy drink, and by three you're asleep at your desk. It's fixable, and it mostly comes down to what's in the bag.

What holds up until lunchtime

Some food is built for a morning in a bag and some isn't. Things that improve or hold: grain salads (the dressing soaks in), roast vegetables, anything with lentils or beans, cold chicken, frittata. Things that don't: anything leafy that's already dressed, anything crispy, anything with bread that's already been assembled. Pack lettuce dry and dress it at your desk; keep bread separate; and if you're carrying something crunchy, carry it in its own container.

Build the lunch around protein

The 3PM slump is mostly a lunch that was all carbohydrate. A sandwich, a pastry, a bowl of pasta — blood sugar up, blood sugar down, and you're reaching for the biscuits. Put 25–35g of protein at the centre of lunch and the afternoon looks different: chicken, eggs, tuna, beans, a proper portion of cheese or yoghurt. Then carbohydrate for energy, and vegetables for volume.

Keep a desk kit

A small stash at work covers the days you forgot: tinned fish, a jar of nuts, oats, a few instant-rice pouches, olive oil. With that and whatever's in the office fridge you can assemble something decent in five minutes. It's not glamorous. It beats the café.

The Cape Town factor

Summer here is the enemy of a packed lunch. A chilled meal in a bag on a hot bus, then two hours in a warm office before it reaches a fridge, is a lunch you shouldn't eat. Use an insulated bag and an ice pack from October to March, and get it into the office fridge the minute you arrive.

Or hand lunch off entirely

A lot of people who order Prepd order it for lunch, not dinner. A box of five plates on Monday morning is a week of work lunches — each one 460–580 calories with protein listed, in a container that goes from fridge to microwave to desk. Delivery is tracked, in a window you choose, so it can come to the office rather than home. It's the version of "healthy lunch" that survives the week you're actually having.
