Fresh vs Frozen Meal Delivery: What Actually Changes in the Box
Why a fresh, cooked-on-the-day meal and a frozen one are different products — texture, nutrition, safety, and what to expect from each.

"Chef-prepared" is on every box. Whether that chef cooked it this morning or in March is the thing that actually decides what it's like to eat. Here's what changes.
Texture is the big one
Freezing forms ice crystals inside food, and those crystals puncture cell walls. When it thaws, the water leaks out. That's why frozen greens go limp, frozen rice goes either mushy or chalky, and a frozen sauce with any dairy in it tends to split when it's reheated. Proteins hold up better — a stew freezes fine — but anything with a crisp edge or a fresh crunch doesn't survive.
A fresh meal, cooked and chilled the same day, keeps its structure. Roast vegetables still have their edges. A grain salad still has bite. You reheat it and it tastes like it did on the plate.
Nutrition changes less than you'd think — but it does change
Freezing itself preserves most nutrients well. What costs you is the process around it: meals made for freezing are often cooked further to survive reheating from frozen, and the two heating cycles (cook, then reheat from solid) lose more of the heat-sensitive vitamins than one gentle reheat from chilled. It's not dramatic. But "fresh" isn't just marketing.
Shelf life is the honest trade-off
This is where frozen wins, and it's worth saying plainly. A frozen meal lasts months; a fresh chilled meal lasts three to five days. If you want to stock a freezer for emergencies, buy frozen. If you want to eat well this week, buy fresh and eat it this week. A fresh service that delivers a few times a week rather than once is designed around that — you're never holding meals longer than they should be held.
Safety: cold chain, not the freezer, is what matters
People assume frozen is safer. What actually matters is the cold chain — whether the food stayed below 5°C from the kitchen to your fridge. A fresh meal that's chilled quickly after cooking and delivered in a chilled bag, tracked, within a window, is as safe as anything in a supermarket. A frozen meal that thawed in a van and refroze is not. Ask how it travels.
How we do it
Every Prepd box is cooked on the morning it's delivered, chilled straight away, and driven to you in a window you chose, with a message when the driver's close. We deliver three days a week — Monday, Wednesday, Friday — because a box of fresh meals shouldn't have to last seven. Eat them by the next delivery day and every plate tastes the way Jon meant it to.
Hungry?
Thirteen chef-designed plates, delivered Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
No subscription. Order by 8PM the night before.
